University of Lugano, Switzerland, Grants Honorary Doctorate,
Academic Board Membership to H.E. Dr. Jamal Sanad Al-Suwaidi;
Holds The Mirage Signing Ceremony
The University of Lugano, Switzerland, has granted an Honorary Doctorate in Political Science and International Relations and Membership of the Academic Council to His Excellency Dr. Jamal Sanad Al-Suwaidi, Director General of the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research (ECSSR).
The university organized a ceremony on 17 November 2015 during which H.E. Dr. Jamal Sanad Al-Suwaidi aldo signed copies of his latest book, The Mirage. The event was attended by Professor Antonello Martinez, Chancellor of University of Lugano, Prof. Dr. Abdullah Rawh, Vice Chancellor of the University, Ph.D. Director of Cardiac Surgery, and President of the Italian-Emirati Friendship Society, Professor Manuela Di Martino, Director of University of Lugano, Professor Arony Strutse, President of the University’s Academic Council and faculty member Professor Diallma.
Speaking at the ceremony, Prof Manuela Di Martino said it gives her great pleasure to honor H.E. Dr. Jamal Sanad Al-Suwaidi, who has gained prominence in the field of research. He has made significant academic contributions that have enriched political science in general, and international relations, in particular, filling a huge gap in the Arab and international in this domain, she said. Prof. Di Martino said that H.E. Dr. Jamal Sanad Al-Suwaidi’s efforts have helped researchers and intellectuals find accurate information and analysis.
In her speech, Prof Di Martino highlighted the writings of H.E. Dr. Jamal Al-Suwaidi and also referred to The Mirage, describing it is a roadmap through which we can deal with the problem of political and religious groups given the threat facing certain European countries and terrorist attacks carried out by ISIS there. She referred to Islamic Political Movements and Authority in the Arab World: The Rise and Fall, which analyzes the experiences of Islamist groups in exercise of power, especially following the so-called ‘Arab Spring’.
She said that Prospects for the American Age: Sovereignty and Influence in the New World Order is a qualitative addition to studies on international relations, especially those dealing with the nature of the new world order and the US position, in particular. From Tribe to Facebook: The Transformational Role of Social Networks is also a pioneering work in its own sphere, Prof. Di Martino said.
During the ceremony, the University of Lugano also granted H.E. Dr. Jamal Sanad Al-Suwaidi membership of its Academic Council in recognition of his intellectual, research and academic contributions that play an important role in enriching the cultural arena not only in the UAE and the Arab region but also in different parts of the world.
H.E. Dr. Jamal Sanad Al-Suwaidi expressed his gratitude to the University of Lugano for the honor. He said that Lugano is one of the most prestigious Swiss universities and is greatly admired by Swiss and international academia given its considerable experience, advanced levels of education and the high-level research inputs.
He said that such an honor makes him proud and enhances his enthusiasm for greater accomplishments. This highlights the importance of making efforts to enrich intellectual and cultural arenas with new and creative ideas. His Excellency said that the honor is an acknowledgment of his efforts and gives him greater sense of responsibility to continue to work hard and do more research.
H.E. Dr. Jamal Sanad Al-Suwaidi then signed copies of The Mirage for those present on the occasion. The Mirage has been released in Arabic, English and French. Since first edition, it has dominated cultural discourse and captured the attention of many thinkers and researchers in Arab and Western countries. Five editions of the book in Arabic, nine in English, and one in French, have been released so far.
